Skin Biopsy – A skin biopsy is a procedure where a small piece of abnormal skin is removed for testing. There are 3 main types of skin biopsies:
- A shave biopsy takes a thin slice off the top of the skin and can be used to remove superficial abnormal areas.
- A punch biopsy takes a core (a small cylindrical fragment of tissue from the area of interest) and can be used to remove small lesions as well as diagnose rashes and other conditions.
- Excisional biopsies are usually larger and deeper and are used to completely remove an abnormal area of skin such as a skin cancer.
Nail avulsion – A nail avulsion is an in-office procedure in which the nail plate (hard part of your nail) is removed from your affected finger or toenail. Nail avulsion may either be useful for diagnostic purposes like exploration of the nail bed, nail matrix and the nail folds and before contemplating a biopsy on the nail bed or for therapeutic purposes like onychocryptosis, warts, onychomycosis, chronic paronychia, nail tumors, matricectomy and retronychia. The procedure is carried out mostly under local anesthesia with or without epinephrine.
Body Piercing – It’s a form of body modification, is the practice of puncturing or cutting a part of the human body, creating an opening in which jewelry may be worn. Our trained professional can pierce any part of your body. We will help you to feel comfortable throughout the process and carefully explain everything about home care.
Dermatology Services FAQ’s
Do not use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, as these can dry out your skin and irritate the area around the piercing. First, remember to wash your hands with an antibacterial soap. Then use a cotton swab and your cleaning solution to gently wipe the area around your belly button and the ring.
The best way to do this is to soak your piercing in salt water for 10 minutes, typically by forming a suction seal between your belly and a cup of salt water. Alternatively, gently swab the piercing site with salt water and leave it in place for 10 minutes, then rinse it clean.
Two panels of different allergens are applied on a small area on the upper back. The area is then covered so it is watertight. The patch test is usually left on your back for two days. After the patch has been on the skin for 48 hours, you will return to the office for a brief evaluation and interpretation of the results. You may also need to return at 72 or 96 hours for a second or third reading if deemed necessary by your health care provider. You will be given information on any allergens that tested positive and will meet with the doctor to review your results.
It generally takes up to 45 minutes to perform the procedure. If there are multiple toes being treated, it may take longer.
Nail surgery is performed under local anaesthetic making the procedure 100% pain-free. For those that would like the injection of local anaesthetic to be pain-free, we offer the use of Comfort-in to numb the skin prior to injection.
Note times in the table and that jewellery you are pierced with should not be removed during the healing time.
The skin is the largest organ in the body. Taking care of it should be a priority.
If you’re pierced at Essential Beauty and follow our aftercare instructions, the chances of an infection are virtually non-existent.
No. The biopsy itself is painless, although the injection of the local anesthetic before the biopsy usually produces a mild stinging sensation lasting a few seconds. After the biopsy, the skin heals rapidly within a few days and the healing site is almost never uncomfortable or painful.
The neuropathologist will provide your doctor with the biopsy results within 14 days (most biopsy types) of your tissue arriving at the laboratory. Please make sure to schedule a follow up appointment with your doctor two weeks after the biopsy appointment for follow up.
